See you in September! And October. And November . . .

This autumn I’m getting out about – because I can!

And I hope you’ll join me – because you want to!

I’m on the road again CELEBRATING LIVE THEATRE with a show called BREAK A LEG!  It’s a one-man evening of comedy all about theatre people (stars of stage and screen - some you’ve heard of, some you haven’t) and I’m touring it now, and again in the spring, because it’s quite theatrical and it’s wonderful to be back in real theatres with real audiences who are LIVE and THERE . . . Not that Zoom wasn’t fun, but believe me: you can’t beat live theatre – there is something very special about it.  And audiences seem to enjoy BREAK A LEG!   We have had 5-star reviews and sell-out shows and lots of laughs.

I’m excited to be double-jabbed and out meeting people again.  That’s why this September, October and November I’m also taking to a variety of THEATRES and LITERARY FESTIVALS and BOOKSHOPS - the odd ARENA and even a CATHEDRAL (Ely Cathedral) around the land with a show about my new book, published on 16 September by Penguin Michael Joseph.  It’s a childhood memoir called ODD BOY OUT.  The book is about why I am what I am – and writing it surprised me in all sorts of ways.  It’s about childhood and what life was like in the 1950s and 1960s when I was growing up – and much more . . . It may surprise you, too.  What won’t surprise you is that it features a fair bit of name-dropping: stories of some of the extraordinary people I’ve been lucky enough to meet.

And this autumn I’m being lucky enough to meet three of my favourite actresses: Dame Eileen Atkins, Hayley Mills and Joanna Lumley.  I’ll be talking to them about their lives – and their new books, at the Duchess Theatre, at the Barnes Bookfest and at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.  In Windsor, I will also be talking about the late Duke of Edinburgh and my recent book about his remarkable life, PHILIP: THE FINAL PORTRAIT.

It’s going to be a roller-coaster of an autumn for me – with serious stuff, fun stuff, and even a cabaret evening celebrating ODD BOY ODD and the songs from the great musicals of the 1950s that I loved as a boy.  That’s at the Crazy Coqs cabaret room on 13 September.

There are thirty or so dates here and more dates to come.  Watch this space.  Meanwhile, if you can get to one of these events, I hope you will.

But if for any reason you can’t and you’d like a personally dedicated copy of ODD BOY OUT (or any of my books) my local independent bookshop will be happy to help you.  Send them the details and I will pop into their shop and sign the book personally for you.  You can contact them here: books@barnesbookshop.com
